Fall family photo season is one of my favorite times of year.
The softer light. The warm desert colors. The slightly cooler evenings. And families coming together to document another season of life.
But before the session even begins, there’s one question I hear all the time:
"What should we wear?"
Choosing outfits for your family photos can feel overwhelming, but it really doesn’t have to be. The goal isn’t for everyone to match perfectly. It’s to choose pieces that feel comfortable, coordinate naturally, and allow the focus to stay where it belongs — on your family.
Here are a few tips I recommend when planning outfits for fall family photos in Queen Creek and throughout the East Valley.
Start With a Color Palette
Instead of choosing one color for everyone, start with a small palette of colors that work well together.
For Arizona family photos, I love soft, warm, earthy tones that complement our desert landscape.
Think:
Cream
Tan
Camel
Rust
Olive or sage
Muted blue
Denim
Soft brown
Dusty rose
Burgundy
You don’t need to use all of them. Choose three or four colors and work them throughout your family’s outfits.
This gives your photos a coordinated look without making everyone feel overly matched.
Choose Your Outfit First
If you’re the one planning everyone’s outfits, start with something you feel good in.
Your comfort matters.
A long dress or skirt can add beautiful movement to photos, especially during walking, playing, and candid moments. But if a dress doesn’t feel like you, don’t wear one just because you think you’re supposed to.
Jeans, boots, a favorite blouse, or something simple and comfortable can photograph just as beautifully.
Once you find something you love, build the rest of the family’s outfits around it.
Add Texture and Layers
Texture photographs beautifully and adds interest without distracting from the people in the image.
Knits, denim, linen, corduroy, soft sweaters, flowing fabrics, and subtle layers can all help create depth in your photos.
Arizona fall weather can still be warm, so keep comfort in mind. Lightweight fabrics and simple layers can give you the feeling of fall without making anyone uncomfortable during the session.
Especially the kids.
The more comfortable they are, the easier it is for them to relax, move, play, and simply be themselves.
Keep Patterns Simple
Patterns can absolutely work for family photos.
A soft floral dress, subtle plaid, or small print can even be a great starting point for your entire color palette.
The key is balance.
If one person is wearing a pattern, try keeping the other outfits more simple and neutral.
I also recommend avoiding large logos, bright neon colors, bold graphics, and too many competing patterns.
When you look back at these photos, I want your eyes to go to the people you love first.
Think About Your Location
One of the things I love about photographing families in Queen Creek and the East Valley is how many beautiful natural backdrops we have.
Desert trails. Mountain views. Open spaces. Warm neutral tones. Golden Arizona sunsets.
Choosing colors that complement the location helps everything come together naturally.
Creams, warm neutrals, muted greens, dusty blues, rust tones, and denim all photograph beautifully against the Arizona landscape.
Let the Kids Be Comfortable
Family sessions don’t have to mean standing perfectly still and smiling at the camera the entire time.
I want kids to move.
To laugh.
To explore.
To hug you when they feel like it.
Those little in-between moments are often the ones parents end up loving most.
Choose clothing and shoes that allow your children to move comfortably. When kids aren’t worried about uncomfortable clothes or shoes, they have more freedom to simply be themselves.
And that is what I want to photograph.
Most Importantly, Let It Feel Like Your Family
Your family photos should feel elevated, but they should still feel like you.
You don’t need to completely change your style for a photo session.
You don’t need perfectly coordinated outfits.
And you definitely don’t need perfectly behaved children.
You just need to show up together.
Because years from now, these images won’t only remind you what everyone was wearing.
They’ll remind you how small your kids were.
The way they reached for your hand.
The way your family fit together in this particular season.
The laughter.
The connection.
The little moments you didn’t realize you would miss someday.
